The accused in the double murder case of journalist KJ Singh and his mother — Gaurav Kumar — has a criminal case registered against him back at his village in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district, the Aurangabad police informed their Mohali counterparts on Monday after rechecking his background.

Kumar had been involved in a scuffle in 2013 and has a case under the Section 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code registered against him at the Aurangabad police station.

The Aurangabad police had earlier told the team of Mohali police, which had travelled to Kumar’s native village to verify his background, that Kumar’s record was clean.

However, Mohali police insisted on rechecking Kumar’s previous record as they had come to know about his involvement in criminal cases during interrogation. Deputy superintendent of police (city-1) Alam Vijay Singh has also confirmed about the case against Kumar.

Meanwhile, the police are also verifying the record books of the neighbouring areas of Bulandshahr from where he had allegedly fled with his live-in partner.

Original number plate recovered

Police have also recovered the original number plate of KJ’s green Ikon car and said that Kumar got it replaced with a fake one from a mechanic at Mohali’s Kumbra.
