A couple committed suicide by hanging themselves at their rented house at Mangwal village in Sangrur on Tuesday.

Deceased are Kamaljit Singh alias Minta, 24, of Masani village near Bhawanigarh, and Heena, 20, of Sangrur. The two had gotten married 10 months back. It was an inter-caste marriage and the man was working as car mechanic in Sangrur.

As per available information, Minta’s colleagues called him repeatedly, but he did not attend the calls. Thereafter, they informed his brother who reached Minta’s residence and found the couple dead.

Police said that the couple had left a suicide note in which they have mentioned not to blame anyone for their death, and requested for their cremation to be performed on the same pyre.

“The suicide note states that they are ending their lives willingly. Police is probing the matter and the bodies have been sent for postmortem at the civil hospital in Sangrur,” said investigation officer Gurmail Singh.

Sources said that initially both their families had opposed the marriage, but had accepted the couple’s decision later. However, they couple had started living separately at Mangwal village seven months back.
