Nine food samples fail lab test

Nine samples of various food items failed the laboratory test in Sangrur. District health officer Dr Surinder Singla said out of 69 samples collected in December last and January this year, nine samples failed to meet the required standards as per the Food Safety Act.

District health officer Dr Surinder Singla said out of 69 samples collected in December last and January this year, nine samples failed to meet the required standards as per the Food Safety Act.

He said notices had been sent to the owners of erring food stores.

"Before filing a case against the defaulters, we have given them a month's time to move referral laboratory in Ghaziabad for their satisfaction. The reports of referral laboratory will be considered as final result," he added.

According to the Food Safety and Standards Act, a fine of Rs 1 to 5 lakh could be slapped on manufacturers or shopkeepers selling substandard edible items.
