To ensure that rail passengers have an enjoyable journey, the Northern Railway will be deploying a ‘train captain’ in long route mail and express trains. If a passenger travelling in the train faces any problem related to food, cleanliness, working of AC/fans, availability of water in the toilets, he can directly approach an on-board ‘train captain’, who will be solely responsible for redressing the problems of the passengers.

The need for a train captain in trains was felt after it was found that the grievances of on-board passengers were not being addressed despite the existing helpline numbers and presence of police personnel.

As of now, on the instructions of Vivek Kumar, divisional railway manager of Ferozepur division, a ‘train captain’ was deployed on Wednesday in 19224 Jammu Tawi - Ahmedabad Express and in coming days the ‘train captain’ will be nominated for the other trains also.

Divisional commercial manager Amitabh Kumar said that the designation of a ‘train captain’ will be given to the senior ticket checker in the train. He will have a badge tied on his arm, so that passenger can easily recognise him and the contact number of a ‘train captain’ will be mentioned on the reservation chart.

Kumar said that the tasks of ticket checkers have not been changed. Ticket checkers were already dealing with the passengers directly but assigning a designation of ‘train captain’ to the senior ticket checker in the team will add a responsibility.

Earlier, this service was available in the Southern Railway but now the railway board has issued notice to all the railway zones for starting this service in the trains.

However, a chief ticket inspector, requesting anonymity, said that this step has increased the pressure on them. “Moreover, the railway should work on improving the response network. Whenever, we give a message to the control room, the response is not satisfactory. Even, the workers of carriage department are not listening to us and at last, we face the ire of passengers,” he expressed.

Kumar said, “We are going to provide a separate telephone line to the train captain, so that train captain do not face any problem while sending alert to the control room and the department is working to ensure the quick redressal of passengers’ grievances.”
