The accused, the police claimed, have admitted that they had killed their accomplice, Pappu (identified only by his first name), by offering him liquor laced with poison in July 2011 at Shakti Nagar Chowk of Basti Jodhewal.
Pappu's body was found at Shakti Nagar Chowk in July last year. The police had filed a case under section 174 of the CrPC, though the deceased's wife had cried foul over his death.
At that time, the police had suspected the death to be a case of drug overdose.
Late on Thursday night, the police arrested the accused from an isolated place near the railway yard here. The five, identified as Karan Kumar, Sandeep Singh, Uday Bahadur, Sandeep Kumar and Mahinder Singh, were arrested, while their accomplice, one Sunny, managed to escape.
Assistant commissioner of police (north) Swapan Sharma on Friday said the accused caved in during interrogation.
The ACP said Karan Kumar alias Topi had admitted that he and Sunny had murdered Pappu by giving him intoxicants in liquor after an argument over distribution of the money they had looted.
The accused used to meet every night near the railway station to plan the robberies. Sharma said some of the accused were already facing trial for robbery.
