A day after HT’s report that the Facebook profile of gangster Ravi Deol, who is lodged in a Sangrur jail, has seen updates twice this month, minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa ordered a crackdown on Friday. But it took a squad of 150 cops 25 minutes to even enter the jail premises for the raid around 5am on Friday, an officer told HT o the condition of anonymity; and they found “no communication device” including in Deol’s barracks.
“Twelve police teams of senior policemen conducted a surprise raid early morning. Police searched all the barracks. We will not allow any illegal activity in the jail,” said Mandeep Singh Sidhu, senior superintendent of police, who was part of the raiding squad. The SSP further informed that, on the directions of the minister, a case over the gangster’s FB account activity has been shifted to the police’s cyber cell “to ascertain from where this account was operated”.
In his post on April 22, Deol had uploaded a picture with the text, “Kambli sadi fakir di, hasia taadi maar, aakhe eh vi leh gaya modean utton bhaar,” which roughly translates to: “The ascetic laughed on seeing his blanket burn, another load off my shoulder.” In his post prior to this, on April 11, he had uploaded the picture of a boxer with good wishes ahead of a bout.
