One may find it amusing, but Punjab Technical University’s (PTU) bus was found ferrying members of a wedding party here on Sunday.

The Hindustan Times team spotted the PTU bus bearing registration number PB09Q 3977 at Kiwi Palace, owned by Jaswinder Singh Sangha, on Kala Sanghian-Sandhu Chatha road while wedding party members were disembarking from the vehicle to enter the palace.
The party members revealed that they were here to attend wedding of One Baljinder of Sidhwan village. They travelled from Sidhwan village to Kala Sanghian village in the university’s bus, which was otherwise allowed to ply on Ramamandi (Jalandhar) to PTU campus (Kapurthala).
Interestingly, such hired buses of the educational institutions were not permitted to undertake commercial activities without obtaining special permit from the secretary, regional transport authority (RTA) concerned after paying requisite road tax.
PTU public relations officer Rajneesh Sharma said that officials concerned would inquire into the matter on Monday.
“In fact, we hired this bus from a private contractor. The terms of agreement will be scrutinised tomorrow. We will revert back accordingly,” Sharma added.
Secretary, RTA Jaskiran Singh said that he would verify the records tomorrow to ascertain whether requisite tax was paid or not, to ply this bus on Sidhwan-Kala Sanghian route.
“Action will be taken against the bus owner, if found, guilty of not paying tax,” he said.
