Visitors were harried a lot on the third continuous day due to the strike of clerical staff at civil surgeon's office in Ludhiana on Friday.
Public services got affected badly due to strike called by the Punjab Health Department Subordinate Offices Clerical Association.
The association has also announced to continue the strike during the next week.
Bharat Bhushan, who works as a computer (clerk rank), has been waiting to get promotion for the past 30 years after joining the department. "We have been demoralised. The government should pay attention towards us. We want increased pay scales and promotions," he added, while sitting on dharna with other employees.
Association president Sukhwinder Singh said, "We are demanding the government to give increased pay scales to the clerical employees. Government should recruit more superintendents, stenos, senior assistants and clerks. We are also demanding promotions for the old employees, including accountants, junior statistical assistants and others. New staff should be recruited in various districts where posts were lying vacant."
He said out of 90 statistical assistant posts at various offices in the state, 75 posts are lying vacant. "We will continue our protest until our demands are fulfilled," he added.
"We will burn effigies and beat 'dhols' at the offices to mark our protest. The protest is also being held in other districts of Punjab."
There is no relief for the visitors who have failed to get or submit their documents for various purposes at civil surgeon's office due to the strike. Harjit Singh, a visitor, said "I don't know when I will get the required documents. The authorities should take immediate action to resolve the problem as every time I spend lot of money on bus fares to visit the office, but still no information on when the employees will return to work."
