Despite of numerous complaints, the residents of Cheema Park area of Gandhi Colony live with the fear of getting water-borne diseases as they are still being supplied water unfit for consumption.
The residents suspect that sewage is being mixed with water being supplied to around 10 houses in the area.
They claim that despite several complaints to the councillor concerned, no relief has come their way yet. The residents are now installing their own water filters as they have no assurance about the quality of water being supplied to their homes.
"We were being forced to get contaminated water which usually stinks. We have made several complaints, but the problem is not being solved. For the prevention of diseases, we drink filtered water now, but not everyone can afford a filter. We demand the MC authorities to find the fault in the water supply line", said Jatinder Singh, a resident of house number 3536/9, Cheema Park.
Another resident, Vishal, said the problem was common here. "The MC officials should take steps before any resident falls sick," he added.
According to the residents, the water is yellow and brown in colour at times. They have also demanded the health department to collect samples for water testing.
In September 2012, more than 50 cases of gastroenteritis and diarrhoea were reported in Jawahar Nagar camp, situated in the same ward. The reason behind the outbreak was contaminated water.
When contacted, councillor of ward 50, Kapil Kumar Sonu, assured to redress the problem in the area.
Manjit Singh, additional commissioner (O&M) of Zone C and D, said, "We have not got any complaint regarding problem of stinking water
supply. I think there could be no leakage in the water pipe. I will send a team to Cheema Park to check the problem."
