A 58-year-old retired armyman gunned down his wife with his double barrel rifle in the kitchen of their house in Jassiyan village on Sunday afternoon. As per family members, the accused, Darshan Lal, 58, is suffering from a kidney problem and has been mentally disturbed because of it for the past few years.

The victim, Kuldeep Kaur, 55, was preparing lunch for the family when the incident took place. The accused pumped two bullets into her back, killing her on the spot. Hearing the bullet shots, family members and neighbours rushed to the kitchen and upon seeing her bleeding profusely, took her to a hospital where she was declared brought dead. As per the police, the accused made no attempt to escape after the crime.

Sub-inspector Paramdeep Singh, the station house officer (SHO) of Haibowal police station, said the incident took place around 2 in the afternoon. “Kuldeep Kaur was cooking lunch for the family when Darshan Lal went in the kitchen and pumped in two bullets in her body from back,” he said. The sub-inspector added that Darshan Lal is a retired subedar from Indian Army, who has been suffering from a renal problem for the past ten years. He undergoes dialyses every week.

“Family members told the police that Darshan Lal had been cleaning his double barrel .12 bore rifle for the past two days. He had also called on his two daughters, who are married, two days ago to meet him,” said the SHO.

“We have came to know that there were some issues between him and his wife, but it was regular spat. We are questioning Darshan Lal to know what led him kill his wife, but he is not answering any question. He says he has no idea what had happened,” the SHO added.

The police have arrested the accused and registered a murder case against him.

Had been visiting ‘godmen’ for treatment

Instead of availing treatment from a specialist doctor, the family had taken Darshan Lal to several ‘babas’ and ‘sorcerers’ in the name of treatment. As a result his problem increased. He had reportedly been suffered insomnia too, which ultimately affected his mental health.
