Following Saturday's accident where 16 schoolchildren were injured when the school bus they were travelling in overturned, a case has been registered against Ajanta Model Senior Secondary School chairman Raman Arora by the Kapurthala police on Sunday.
As per the FIR, the police registered the chairman also as responsible for the accident as parents had earlier complained to the school management against the same driver for rash driving. The driver was responsible for a similar accident ten days ago when the bus slipped into fields nearby. But, the children had escaped unhurt.
Bholath station house officer (SHO) Parminder Singh said that they had named the school owner in the FIR for negligence because he failed to take any action in spite of parents complaining against driver Visakha Singh's rash driving.
"If the school authorities are found guilty, we will arrest the chairman also," he said. The SHO also said that police raided many places to arrest driver who was absconding.
Sukhjinder Singh, father of Harpreet Kaur (8) who was injured in the accident, said, "We had already requested the school authorities to change the driver because of his rash driving."
The FIR said that the bus driver lost control of the over-speeding vehicle causing the bus to overturn on to fields near Baagwanpur-Kamrawa link road.
Villagers and passerby rescued the children and the bus driver. However, driver Visakha Singh fled the spot.
The school bus, which was carrying around 25 children, was on its way to drop them at their homes in the nearby villages, at around 2pm. As many as 16 students were injured with six being seriously injured and admitted to nearby hospitals in Jalandhar and Bholath.
A case was registered against the driver and school owner under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act of endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
