A 26-year-old mason was killed after a speeding Mercedes car hit his cycle in Phase 11 on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.
The luxury car is registered in the name of the eatery Hoshiarpurian Di Hatti in Phase 3B2 and was being driven by its owner’s son Ankit Sharma, who has been booked.
Police said victim Shankar Kumar, who was from Bihar and was staying at Jagatpura, was returning home when the accident took place around 11:30pm. He was rushed to the Mohali civil hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
Meanwhile, the driver fled from the spot, leaving the vehicle behind. Police said when the car was impounded, both its front and rear registration plates were missing.
However, a passerby had managed to note down the number before the plates were allegedly removed by someone.
