Some unidentified youths were reportedly spotted at a vacant plot behind the house of local Congress MLA Navtej Singh Cheema under suspicious circumstances on Sunday night.

Cheema and his wife were not in the city, while his 7-year-old son Gurnihal Singh Cheema and mother Harsharan Kaur were at the house. Cheema has apprehended something fishy in the incident and has approached the district police.

“When I was in Shimla on Sunday evening, my neighbours informed me that they noticed nearly six youths indulging in suspicious activities at a plot behind my house. When they called them, the youths silently left the place,” Cheema said.

“Even two days ago, I received a call from a person who claimed to be an SP posted with the Kapurthala police. As I was busy, I could not talk to him. But later, when I tried calling him, the phone was switched off,” Cheema said.

He said after correlating both the incidents, it seems that something fishy was being planned by someone against me and my family. “I have reported the matter to the police,” he said.

Sultanpur Lodhi SHO Harpreet Singh said: “I have visited the place. Prima facie, it appears that some drug addicts must be using the place considering it as abandoned. But, we have assured full security to the MLA's family.”
