Former chief minister and permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee Captain Amarinder Singh said that the investigation being done into the drug smuggling in Punjab following the arrest of the main kingpin must be taken to logical conclusion and whosoever is found involved must be brought to book irrespective of his party affiliations or political influence.
Talking to media persons after meeting with party workers here on Thursday Captain Amarinder Singh pointed out, the drug addiction was the worst affliction the society faced and an entire generation was threatened being ruined. "That is why I have sought a probe by a sitting judge of Punjab and Haryana high court in a time bound manner so that the matter is not delayed and buried under carpet", he said, while lauding the Police for unearthing the massive drug racket.
The former chief minister said that during his interactions with the party workers and general public he had found that the farmers were yet to get their payments for the paddy. "The payments have been
delayed for over a month now," he said.
He stated that the problem of moisture was not new and it has been coming for so many years. "It is the responsibility of the government to take up the matter on time with the Union government so that the farmers do not suffer.
But the government does not want to do that as it wants to facilitate the jathedars to pocket commission in connivance with the arthiyas", he said, while disclosing that he used to do it during his tenure and that is the reason he always ensured that the farmers got the payment of their produce within 24 hours.
Replying to a question about his meetings he pointed out, he has been in politics for about fifty years now. Moreover, he added, he has led the Congress in the state in various capacities for about 15 years. "I know almost each and every worker personally and it is my responsibility to meet them and inquire about their plight", he said, while clarifying that his role as a senior party leader and a member of the CWC and that of the PPCC leadership was different.
He alleged that over one lakh false cases had been slapped on the Congress workers across the state. "Besides, there were problems of land grabbing as a few victims met him today at Moga also. For seven
years now our workers have been persecuted and victimized and I feel it my responsibility to stand by them", said Amarinder Singh.
Amarinder Singh stated that he will continue with the mass mobilization and public contact programme to maintain and boost the morale of the party rank and file. "It was important that each and
every leader of the party in the state contributed his bit to ensure that the Congress win all the 13 seats in Punjab in the coming parliamentary elections," he said.
Among others present on the occasion included former district Congress president Tara Singh Sandhu, former MLA Vijay Sathi, Harpal Singh Brar secretary of PPCC and others.
