Two persons were on Friday sentenced to jail for illegal possession of charas and opium in a case dating back to August 2010.
Additional district and sessions judge PP Ranta convicted Pradeep Kumar, a resident of village Kalari of Naina Devi area of district Bilaspur on Thursday at Mandi under Sections 18 and 20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and sentenced him to 10 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) with a fine of Rs 1.3 lakh.
The court ordered that in default of payment of the fine, the accused has to serve an additional simple imprisonment of one and half year.
The court also convicted the co-accused Rohit Gautam of Guru Bazaar (Chhatrata) area of Amritsar, Punjab, and sentenced him to three years RI and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. He has to serve additional six months in case of failure to pay the fine, ordered the court.
A police team at Aut had nabbed both the accused at Largee Dam area and recovered 1.5 kg charas (cannabis) and 625 gram opium on August 15, 2010.
Assistant public prosecutor Ajay Thakur examined eight witnesses to prove the guilt of the accused during the trial.
