Wholesaler shot dead in Tarn Taran, Rs 1.4 lakh looted

A wholesaler of cosmetic products, Ajit Jain, 60, was shot dead in broad daylight by three unidentified car-borne men who took away Rs 1.4 lakh that he was carrying, right opposite a bank on the Tarn Taran road in Patti, 20 km from the district headquarters, on Friday.
He was on foot and carrying the money to deposit it in the bank, and was waylaid by the men in a Hyundai i20 hatchback that did not have a registration number. Police said there were three men in the car and two of them alighted and snatched the bag of money from Ajit. When he was resisting, one of them shot him in his left leg; and they fled with the bag. Passersby rushed Ajit to a private hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Soon after, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Darshan Singh Mann reached the spot with other officers and started investigation. “A case under sections 302 (murder) and 395 (dacoity) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered. We are very close to nabbing the men,” he said
Meanwhile, angry members of the Jain community gathered at the spot and raised slogans against the police. Market unions too announced to observe complete shutdown in protest against the police on Saturday.
