In the document regarding the change in name, Amarinder, scion of the erstwhile princely state of Patiala, has been named as a member of the trust, which manages TU. But he is the only one among the seven trustees who has not signed the document.

Even as efforts to contact Amarinder proved futile on Saturday, his wife Preneet Kaur, who is the MP from Patiala and union minister of state for external affairs, said the royal family had no say in the trust's functioning "for the past many years".

"It is unfortunate that an institute situated in Punjab does not want to give preference to students from the state," Preneet added.
