A day after a 29-year-old woman committed suicide following alleged dowry harassment, police on Saturday booked her husband, her father-in-law and mother in-law.

The deceased has been identified as Rajbir Kaur. Those booked are her husband Major Singh, father in-law Sukhwant Singh and mother in-law Karamjit Kaur of Pandoori Warrainch village in Amritsar.

The case was registered on the complaint of the deceased’s father, Gurdev Singh of Rampura village in Amritsar. He said that her daughter, a staff nurse at a private hospital in Amritsar, married Major Singh in December 2014 and the couple had a three-year-old son. “Around six months after her marriage, the accused started demanding dowry from my daughter. Her in-laws even thrashed her over their demand for dowry,” he said.

“On Friday, we came to know that Rajbir was admitted to a private hospital. We immediately reached there and the doctors there told us that Rajbir was dead. My daughter had taken a poisonous substance because she was sick of the behaviour of her in-laws,” he added.

The deceased’s brother, Gurjit Singh, who is about to be married, however, alleged that Rajbir’s in-laws killed her and thrust the poison in her mouth. “My sister was happily shopping for my wedding in October, a day before she died. She could not have taken the extreme step without calling us once. Her husband and in-laws should be booked under murder charges,” he said.

Meanwhile, station house officer (SHO) Mohit Kumar of Kambo police station said, “On the complaint of the woman’s father, we have booked the accused under Section 304-B (dowry death) of Indian Penal Code (IPC). After conducting the postmortem at Amritsar civil hospital, we handed over the body to her parents. Further action will be taken on the basis of the autopsy report.”
