Woman shot at by brother-in-law

A middle-aged woman, Manjeet Kaur, widow of one Binder Singh, was critically injured after she was shot at by her brother-in-law Balvir Singh at Dureana road, Kotkapura, on Friday. The victim has been reportedly living in a rented accommodation in Kotkapura and used to do the sewing work to eke out a living.

"The accused had been staying at the rented accommodation of Manjeet Kaur for the last two-three days. Owing to some family dispute, he first tried to shot at the daughter-in-law of the victim and when Manjit Kaur intervened, he shot at her and but was overpowered by her daughter-in-law and his weapon dropped in the scuffle," said a neighbour.

Manjeet Kaur had reportedly been living at Kotkapura, leaving her village at Tahliwala Jattan in Fazilka district along with her son and daughter-in-law. The family belongs to the labour class. The accused had been living at his place Tahliwala Jattan village and had come to Kotkapura for medical treatment.

The accused had allegedly been in jail for about four years for alleged murder of his wife about two decades back. The revolver used in crime was allegedly not licenced and was a contraband weapon bought illegally.

The woman was first taken to civil hospital, Kotkapura, from where she was referred to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, and was stated to have been referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and
