She was well on her way to personifying Ruskin Bond’s iconic tale, ‘Susanna’s Seven Husbands’, which was made popular by the Priyanka Chopra movie ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’.
Closer home, the Punjabi film ‘RSVP: Ronde Sare Vyah Picho’ on a con woman who married men to rob them of their wealth, could well have been based on her, if the allegations are true.
Meet Paramjit Kaur of Gharachon village in Sangrur who had four husbands, starting with Major Singh, then Gurdev Singh, Jagir Singh and Kartar Singh, and had gotten engaged to the fifth, Pushpinder Dass, a resident of Loheakhera.
Luck ran out and she was arrested on Tuesday morning on a complaint by Dass, who alleged that she had defrauded him of money and gold after promising to take him abroad post the wedding.
This was not the first time, as per the FIR. Kaur, in her early 50s now, got the men interested via matrimonial advertisements in vernacular newspapers describing herself as a 40-year-old with NRI connections.
“She targeted men who were widowed and wanted to remarry. After marriage, she took the money from her husband(s) on different pretexts, and left the house, never to return,” said William Jejji, deputy superintendent of police, Sunam, under whose jurisdiction the area falls.
With Dass, her engagement took place on August 7, and the next day she allegedly took Rs 50,000 from him, saying that her mother needed medical care. Later, she took 8 tola gold (80gm, worth Rs 2.4 lakh) and Rs 10 lakh from him, promising to take him abroad, police said. “At the time of her arrest, Rs 7 lakh and 7 tola gold were seized from her.”
“In July 2012, she married Jagir Singh, a resident of Amritsar. She fled with Rs 25 lakh from his house. She was also booked for cheating at Maqboolpura police station on July 30, 2012,” the DSP said.
Kartar Singh belonged to Kharar, and Gurdev Singh to Sangrur. Her first husband, who died, was Major Singh from her village.
Kaur has been booked under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (conspiracy) at the Longowal police station.
A man named Harwinder Singh alias Rimpy, from Sanghreri village of the district, was arrested too. He used to play an NRI from Canada in the con jobs, police said.
Jagsir Singh played her nephew, Jagtar Singh alias Laddi turned her cousin, and Joti Kaur was shown as her sister. They are yet to be arrested.
