Several artistes in city splashed anger, fear and hope for women at a painting exhibition organised to mark International Women's Day in Ludhiana on Friday.
As many as 40 artistes put up their works themed around women in the exhibition titled 'Art for Justice'.
Organised at Gallery Artmosphere, the exhibition features 40-odd works including paintings, drawings and digital art that bring different moods, situations, joys and sorrows in a woman's life on canvas. The exhibition will be on until March 12. The artistes belong to a city-based group named 'Ars'.
Displaying rich creativity and skill, the artistes used powerful strokes and bright colours addressing urgency towards the issue of women's safety and to pass a strong message of hope.
“Our exhibition is aimed at attracting people's attention towards various problems that women face in society,” Jaspreet Mohan Singh, a senior artiste with the group said.
“We wish to tell the importance of women to people and spread awareness about women empowerment,” he added.
Many works portrayed the fear in women towards social evils. The recent outrage of people against brutal gang rape, which occurred in Delhi and multiple such incidents which followed in other cities were also depicted.
“Violence against women is a raging issue today. In our paintings, women have been portrayed as battling violence of some kind. The colour red - symbolising blood and war - dominate the works. So does insecurity and fear,” artiste Parveen Kumar said.
Interestingly, as many as 25 women artistes participated. “This wasn't intentional. But the fact that we dominate the group is a positive sign,” said a female artiste.
