The Jharkhand Congress unit’s inclination to field independent MLA Geeta Koda from Singhbhum faces a mass resignation threat from the party members in West Singhbum.
Geeta Koda is wife of former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, facing charges of corruption. She had applied for Congress’ membership in January this year.
State Congress Committee chief Sukhdeo Bhagat said the party high command had been informed that Geeta Koda would be the best candidate for Singhbhum seat. The final meeting with top Congress leadership will be held in Delhi to take the final call on the issue.
“ Denying Congress membership to Geeta would be like punishment to a wife for charges against her husband,” Bhagat said, adding she had been supporting the United Progress Alliance (UPA) government in Jharkhand, helped Congress to win the Rajya Sabha election.
Meanwhile, at a meeting in Chaibasa on Thursday, district Congress committee members said that they would go for mass resignations if Geeta got the party ticket.
They said that many other leaders could be winning candidate, including Chitrasen Singh Sinku, Sukhdeo Hembrom.
Giving party ticket to an outsider, especially Geeta Koda would be like suicidal attempt for the party, said a senior leader. Member of All Indian Congress Committee (AICC) Sushila Party said that she would go with the party decision, even if Geeta Koda got the election ticket.
