Anushka Shetty’s Bhaagmathie, which released worldwide on January 26, has taken a terrific opening worldwide, grossing a whopping Rs 12 crore from its Telugu version alone on the first day. This is the second biggest opening for Anushka after Rudhramadevi, which grossed around Rs 12.5 crore on the first day. While Rudhramadevi was a multi-starrer and also featured Rana Daggubati and Allu Arjun to draw audiences, Bhaagmathie purely worked on the merit of its content and Anushka’s popularity among the masses. Trade pundits believe Bhaagmathie, thanks to its strong content, might end up as the highest grossing film of Anushka’s career.

Directed by G Ashok, Bhaagmathie is a horror-thriller that takes the genre for granted, only to deceive the audiences with an unpredictable twist. The film has done exceptional business in the US where it has already crossed half million mark, becoming the first woman-centric film to rake in such moolah. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film as of Saturday minted Rs 3.44 crore in the US.

The film also released in Tamil and managed to do decent business in Tamil Nadu. To play her role in Bhaagmathie, Anushka reportedly shed 18 kg. On the career front, she has Gautham Vasudev Menon’s multi-starrer Ondraga, which also stars four leading southern stars. She will reportedly commence work on this project in August.
