National Award winning actor Surabhi Lakshmi would never have thought a shoot about her favourite delicacies would land her in trouble. Lakshmi found herself at the receiving end of abuse on social media when a programme showing her eating beef at one of her favourite restaurants in Kozhikode was aired on Onam.

The programme was aired on Media One channel, Indian Express reports.

Clearing the air, Lakshmi said that the segment was shot three weeks before Onam festival. She was to choose her favourite restaurant which she did. This particular restaurant in Kozhikode is known for its beef dishes. On the show, she was shown enjoying Kerala parantha with beef fry. That got many people angry, who then trolled her.

She posted a selfie recently showing her enjoying Onamsadhya, which also included a chicken dish. The post irked many as Onam is traditionally associated with only vegetarian dishes. She was accused of hurting sentiments with her action.

“The channel has been asking for my interview for quite some time and that’s when I agreed to do that programme in a hotel which I usually visit. Hunger is a basic instinct of life and when I’m hungry I don’t usually care if it’s beef, chicken or pork. The issue is not that I ate beef, but that the programme was telecast during Onam,” Lakshmi was quoted as saying in the Indian Express.

However, in parts of northern Kerala, Onam feast does include non-vegetarian options.
