Vijay’s upcoming film directed by Atlee will retain the title of Mersal.

Vijay’s upcoming film Mersal is currently one of the most awaited releases of the month. Recently, this film was in trouble when the Madras High Court had issued an interim stay on using the title of the film for marketing and publicity. Fans were disheartened by this development. However, it looks like Sri Thenandal Studios has managed a win on this front as the case was dismissed on October 6. After the judgement was pronounced in favour of Vijay and his team, fans couldn’t contain their excitement.

Director of Sri Thenandal Studios, Hema Rukmani took to her Twitter account to do a happy dance. She posted a video where she can be seen announcing the judgement in a ‘Mersal’ manner. The director of the film, Atlee too seemed to be happy about the latest development. He just tweeted, ‘”#Mersal”. Fans have already begun the celebration and are counting down the day to release.

With the ongoing strike by the multiplexes association supported by the Tamil Nadu Producer’s Council, no new movies are allowed to release until the double taxation issue is resolved. The demand is that the Local Entertainment Tax of 10 per cent on Tamil films and 20 per cent on non-Tamil films should not be levied over Goods and Services Tax (GST) by the Chennai Corporation. So when questions arose about Mersal’s timely release, Murali Ramaswamy, also from Thenandal Studios, issued a statement that the movie will surely release as a Diwali treat. It is unclear how the filmmakers will manage this if the double tax issue remains unresolved.

For now though, fans are celebrating the fact that their favourite star is going to grace the silverscreen in a couple of weeks. Also starring Nithya Menen, Kajal Aggarwal and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, the film will see Vijay portraying three different characters -- one of magician, a doctor and the Panchayat head of a village. The film was originally slated to release on October 18.
