Tamil superstar Rajinikanth on Sunday congratulated the makers of Mersal which is in the BJP’s line of fire for references to the Goods and Services Tax, saying the film has addressed an important issue.

“Important topic addressed..... well done!!! congratulations team#mersal’ Rajinikanth said in a brief tweet without referring explicitly to any specific issue after another heavyweight actor Kamal Hassan had tweeted in favour of the film last week.

Actor Vijay’s Diwali release Mersal has kicked up a row with the BJP taking exception to references to GST in the movie, labeling them as “untruths” and demanding that dialogues on the central taxation be deleted.

However, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, his senior colleague P Chidambaram, DMK working president MK Stalin and a host of Tamil cinema industry representatives had supported the film crew on the issue.

Kamal Haasan watched the film along with Vijay, director Atlee and the producers of Mersal at his residence in Chennai on Saunday. While it’s yet unknown what he said exactly after watching the film, the superstar had earlier backed the film on Twitter.

Atlee described Kamal Haasan watching his film as one of the ‘best moments’ of his life. Haasan also posed for pictures with the Mersal team with a banner of his film Apoorva Sagodharargal in the backdrop. Mersal has been panned by a section of the critics for being heavily inspired by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao-directed Apoorva Sagodharargal.

Mersal is cashing in on the controversies and is making a killing at the box-office. Having successfully and comfortably grossed over Rs 100 crore worldwide in just three days, the film is looking to storm into Rs 200 crore club this week. The film features Vijay in triple role. He plays father and two sons while SJ Suryah plays the antagonist.
