As a child, Nagraj Manjule remembers one birthday celebration vividly. The Sairat (2016) director will turn 41 on Friday and reveals that birthdays are always about friends and food.

Nagraj prefers a quiet celebration. “When I was in third standard, I had a huge birthday celebration. To be very honest, it was the first and last grand birthday I ever had. All the villagers in Karmala (Solapur) had gathered, there was a band and there was sheer grandeur. My parents still don’t have an answer as to why we had that celebration,” laughs Nagraj.

The Silence (2016) actor enjoys cooking a meal on his birthdays. He admits that his friends enjoy his various dishes. “Mutton and biryani are the must-haves for a party. My birthdays for the past many years now in Mumbai or Pune are celebrated at home. All friends gather and we enjoy a hearty meal. I enjoy cooking and my friends believe I am a good cook, so they request for a good mutton curry or biryani,” he says.

Nagraj doesn’t believe in celebrating birthdays on a big scale, neither does he like gifts. “The fact that people find time in their busy schedule to come and meet me and wish me is humbling. I am glad and blessed to have such friends and acquaintances,” he says.

On the work front, his Hindi film Jhund recently had Bhushan Kumar step in. “I am also working on two Marathi scripts, one of which I will take on floors by this year end or early next year. There is another project which I am associated with as a producer.”

On a parting note, he adds, “I believe in enjoying the moment and doing my best with what I have in hand. I don’t plan ahead.”
