Vedalam BO: With Rs 15.5 cr, Vedalam sets new first day record

If there’s one star who can claim to matching the box office opening day pull of Tamil film industry stalwarts Rajnikanth and young guns Vijay and Suriya, it is, without doubt, Ajith. The first day collection of his latest film, Vedalam, has once again established his credentials as one of the industry’s most bankable stars.

Mounted on a modest scale but high on drama, the film, released on Diwali (November 10 in South India), grossed Rs 15.5 crore on day one. This is a new record for first day collections in Tamil cinema, even more than Vijay’s Kaththi and Rajinikanth’s Lingaa. Film critic and industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai tweeted about the new record on Thursday.

Vedalam review: Ajith turns Phantom, vilely and violent

Vedalam is among the most anticipated Tamil releases this year. Speaking to The Hindu, the film’s producer AM Rathnam said, “Two years back, I had released Aarambam (another Ajith starrer) two days prior to Deepavali, and it went on to do great business. I’m very confident about Vedalam releasing on Deepavali worldwide. I’m sure it will take the year’s biggest opening. Over the years, there is something sentimental about a Deepavali release for Tamil film producers.”

According to unconfirmed reports, the film had netted in close to Rs 10 crore on day 2. Sreedhar Pillai tweeted that despite heavy rains both Thoongavanam and Vedalam were doing well. He did not give any figures though.
