NEW DELHI: Delhi schoolboy Aryan Chopra is on the verge of becoming India’s next chess Grandmaster.
The 14-year-old produced an impressive show at the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival Masters to achieve his third and final Grandmaster’s norm. The tournament was held from August 21 to 29. Chopra upstaged Armenian GM Ter-Sahakyan Samvel in the final round with black pieces after holding three GMs to draw, finishing a creditable 14 thin a strong field of 40 GMs and 38 International Masters.
The 16 Elo points he gained from the event has taken his overall rating to 2496. He will achieve the GM title once he crosses the 2500 mark. GM B Adhiban finished tied for the second spot, the best performance among Indian players.
