THE NEW SYSTEM

The new scoring system was brought in after the 2004 Olympics. The idea was to bring a balance between difficulty and execution during the routine.

Judges look through four main phases — the pre-flight, support, after-flight and landing. The overall vault of a gymnast should have power, speed, while being explosive and precise as possible.

There are two scores — execution and difficulty and the final score of a gymnast is the total of these two.
