PANAJI: India will look to start with a win when they take on United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their opening match of the AFC U-16 Championship in Group A on Thursday.

Iran and Saudi Arabia will play the inaugural match in the same group. “We have qualified in the tournament on merit and will look forward to qualify for the World Cup U-17 next year on merit by reaching the semi-finals of this tournament,” said India’s chief coach Nicolai Adam.

India’s best achievement in the tournament in the last six appearances was when they reached the quarter-finals in 2002. India, who finished last in the AIFF Youth Cup.

BENGALURU: CK Vineet’s strike guided Bengaluru FC to a solitary goal victory over Singapore’s Tampines Rovers in the first-leg quarterfinals of the AFC Cup.

Vineeth struck in the seventh minute of the game when he tapped home from close range.

The second leg will be played on September 21.
