BAMBOLIM: Already out of the tournament after suffering three consecutive defeats, hosts India now face an uphill task to avoid a clean sweep as they face Brazil in their last match of the BRICS U-17 football tournament at the GMC Stadium on Thursday.

Despite putting up good performances against Russia, South Africa and China, India are yet to open their account in the tournament and are at the bottom of the points table.

It would be a Herculean task for the Indians against fancied Brazil, who are leading the table with an all-win record and regarded as favourites to win the tournament.

“That is a good sign as the boys are preparing for next year’s U-17 World Cup which will me more tough,” said India’s coach Nicolai Adam.

HARJEET TO LEAD INDIA IN JR HOCKEY TOURNEY

NEW DELHI: The Indian junior men’s hockey team under Harjeet Singh is all set to participate in the four-nation International Junior Tournament from October 24 to 30 in Valencia.

India will take on 2013 Junior World Champions Germany in their opening game before playing Belgium and hosts Spain.

“The boys played their heart out in the Australian Hockey League and their performance was commendable. In Valencia, we will now meet some of the top junior teams like Germany, Belgium and Spain which should keep us in good stead for the Junior World Cup later this year,” said team coach Harendra Singh.

MUKESH CONTINUES TO LEAD BY FOUR STROKES

CHENNAI: Mukesh Kumar of Madhya Pradesh came up with a two-under 68 to continue to lead by four strokes after the second round of the inaugural Chennai Open Golf Championship at the Madras Gymkhana Club (MGC) here on Wednesday. The 51-year-old Mukesh (61-68), who had blasted a phenomenal nine-under-61 on day one, kept his overnight four-stroke advantage intact with a total of 11-under-129.

Gurgaon’s Deepinder Singh Kullar (65-68) and Delhi’s Honey Baisoya (67-66) shared second place at seven-under-133.
