KUWAIT CITY: Kuwaiti authorities ordered police to seize the Gulf state’s football association and Olympic committee offices, in the latest round of a sporting power struggle.
The action on Sunday heightened a standoff that has seen Kuwait suspended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and world football’s governing body FIFA since October.
The move came after the government’s sports commission ousted Sheikh Talal Fahad Al-Sabah as head of the Kuwait Football Association (KFA) and the national Olympic committee.
RUSSIAN PARALYMPIANS MAY MISS 2018 GAMES
MOSCOW: Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC) Vice President Rima Batalova has said the country’s paralympians may have to miss the 2018 Winter Games as the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) did not communicate the criteria for Russia’s membership recovery.
In July, the World Anti-Doping Agency urged IPC to suspend the Russian paralympic team from the 2016 Paralympic Games in rio following a report of WADA’s independent commission, alleging that Russia had run a state-controlled doping programme.
ROME MAYOR RESERVES OLYMPIC BID HOPES
ROME: Rome mayor Virginia Raggi remains reticent on her city’s bid to host the 2024 Olympics, saying Monday that it would be better to first think about “abandoned municipal installations”.
Speaking during a visit of the Italian Paralympic delegation preparing to take part in the September 7-18 Rio Games, Raggi said: “In September, after the summer, we’ll tell Gianni Malago what we think about Rome 2024.”
