The Wales striker, signed from West Ham United last month, cut in from the right edge of the penalty area and planted a shot past Middlesbrough keeper Brad Jones.

Shay Given made his debut in goal for City after his move from Newcastle United and produced several good saves to deny the visitors who remained second from bottom without victory. City moved up one place in the table to ninth. Liverpool can reclaim top spot later on Saturday with victory at struggling Portsmouth with leaders Manchester United, who are two points clear.

Tevez’s car seized

Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez has had his £140,000 ($205,300) car seized after he failed to provide a valid UK driving licence. The 25-year-old Argentine was stopped near United's Old Trafford ground because police thought the tinted windows on his white Bentley could be illegal.
