Roger Federer, the five-time Wimbledon champion, will be first on Centre Court against Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu when the All-England Club Grand Slam starts on Monday.

Traditionally the men’s defending champion plays the first match on Wimbledon’s showpiece court, but Rafael Nadal, the 2008 winner, has been forced to withdraw with knee tendinitis.

Championship officials have therefore decided to play the bottom half of the men’s and women’s singles on Monday, meaning French Open champion Federer, bidding for a record 15th Grand Slam title, is first up on Centre Court.
