Holland to get fighter escort

An F16 fighter jet will escort the country's national football team on the final stage of their homeward journey from the World Cup in South Africa on Monday, the Dutch defence ministry announced.

An F16 fighter jet will escort the country's national football team on the final stage of their homeward journey from the World Cup in South Africa on Monday, the Dutch defence ministry announced on Saturday.

Once the airliner carrying the team, which takes on Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, enters Dutch airspace, the F16, painted in the national colour of orange, will fly side-by-side until the squad lands at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

The players will then be transported by a Chinook military helicopter to a hotel where they will be reunited with their families.
