Somdev Devvarman sealed India's victory when he beat Taiwanese ace Lu Yen-hsun 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 at the Yang Ming tennis centre in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan.

Devvarman, ranked 150 in the world, also defeated Taiwan's Ti Chen in their first meet on Friday.

Lu, ranked 59, stormed past India's Rohan Bopanna 7-6 (7/2), 6-2, 6-2 in the opening day singles but struggled throughout Sunday's clash.

Taiwan's Yang Tsung-hua was taking on Bopanna in a dead rubber match later on Sunday.

On Saturday, India's veteran Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes scored a hard-fought victory against Taiwan's young duo Yang Tsung-hua and Yi Chu-huan 6-4, 7-6 (7/0), 6-7 (2/7), 6-2.

Last year India reached the World Group play-offs for the first time since 2005, but lost to Romania and began 2009 in the Asia-Oceania group one.

Taiwan came back to defeat Kazakhstan and secure a group one place in 2009 after they lost to Australia in the first round.
