India's poor run at the French Open continued as Leander Paes and his Austrian partner Alexander Peya crashed out of the second round of the men's doubles event after losing to Mikhail Elgin of Russia and Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin 4-6, 1-6 on Saturday.
The seventh seeded Indo-Austrian pair were shocked by their unseeded opponents in a battle that lasted an hour and 11 minutes.
Paes and Peya lost the match as they failed to convert as many as three out of the four breakpoints that they got.
On the other hand, the Russian-Uzbek duo could manage to convert five out of their 10 breakpoints and advance into the second round.
India’s Sania Mirza and the pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna had all lost in the opening round in their respective doubles matches at Roland Garros.
While the trio’s Olympic chances took a hit, Paes, currently ranked No 7 in doubles, is still guaranteed to retain his top-10 spot and gain a direct berth for London.
Paes was playing the French Open without his regular partner Radek Stepanek, with whom he won the Australian Open early this year.
