Now, the Panthers have drawn attention for a heated altercation that broke out during Monday’s practice. Reports from Charlotte indicated that a significant scuffle erupted between center Luke Fortner and cornerback Mike Jackson.

According to Joe Person of The Athletic, tensions boiled over after members of the offense took issue with a hit delivered to running back Jonathon Brooks during practice.

Canales offers perspective on brawl

Panthers head coach Dave Canales addressed the incident after the session.

Canales said he was encouraged by the way the Panthers responded once the scuffle was over.

He appreciated the increased intensity and physicality in the drills that followed, while also viewing the incident as an opportunity for the defense to learn and make better decisions.

"We had a little bit of a scuffle out there and the response afterwards was more physicality. And that's exactly what we should be. We've gotta tiptoe that line. When we're in pads, we've gotta play football. That's the bottom line," Canales said, per The Athletic's Joe Person.

"But there's some situations where we can be smarter and take care of each other. I think that's what the frustration was ultimately about. But I'm all for it," the head coach added.

Brooks hit sparks Panthers brawl

The confrontation reportedly began after Bryce Young reacted strongly to contact involving Brooks, prompting his teammates on offense to step in and support their quarterback.

Lathan Ransom and Nick Scott were reportedly involved in a hit on Brooks at the line of scrimmage, which led to Young exchanging words with members of the defense. The situation then escalated as Panthers offensive linemen moved in to back their quarterback and teammate.

Young’s reaction appeared to stem from his desire to protect Brooks, who is attempting to return to full strength after recovering from an ACL injury.

If Brooks can remain healthy, he could emerge as an important part of Carolina’s offense this season.

After emotions cooled down, the players involved reportedly remained together for an extended discussion. The Panthers spent roughly 20 minutes talking through the incident before moving on from the confrontation.
