The only thing Germanic about Wimbledon was its precise organisation. It changed in 1985, when a 17-year-old barrelled his way to the men's singles.
Q. Admit it. The strawberries and cream are overrated.
A. I am sure you can find better strawberries and cream on this planet, but the ones at Wimbledon are good too. They are part of the tradition, after all.
Q. And Wimbledon is about tradition. But are there any changes you would like to see?
A. There should be at least one more week between the French Open and Wimbledon. Players need to have time to adapt to the grass.
Q. 20 years later, what's your analysis of those two weeks in 1985?
A. Wimbledon 85 became my second birthday. Overnight I became an international celebrity and with that my whole life changed.
Q. How often do you watch tapes of the 1985 final?
A. I never watch them. I have not watched the match once. I have seen the match point a few times, but not the whole thing.
