Yuki Bhambri reached the second round of ATP Citi Open after his opponent, Stefan Kozlov, retired from their first round encounter due to injury on Tuesday.
Bhambri won the first set 7-5 and was leading 2-0 in the second set when the 19-year old Kozlov suffered an injury and was instructed by his trainer to forfeit the match.
Earlier, Bhambri got the better of the ninth seeded Liam Broady, 6-2, 6-4 in their qualifying round match on Monday as he join five other qualifiers in the 48-men singles main draw where the French Open semi-finalist Dominic Thiem is the top seed and the World No. 9 Kei Nishikori is the second seed.
Yuki Bhambri will now face the sixth seed Gael Monfils from France in the second round.
On the other hand, it was not a good day for compatriot Ramkumar Ramanathan as he was defeated by Argentina’s Guido Pella 6-4, 6-1 in their first round match.
Ramkumar and Yuki are not the only Indians playing at the ATP Citi Open. The French Open mixed doubles champion Rohan Bopanna will team up with Donald Young to form a wildcard pair and they will face the experienced team of Daniel Nestor and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi.
