Remarks on Sena’s role in Babri Masjid demolition leave Patil isolated in BJP

Two leaders of the BJP in Maharashtra have distanced themselves from the state's higher education minister Chandrakant Patil's comments that Shiv Sena workers were not present during the demolition of the Babri Masjid. Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar called it Patil's opinion, adding that the BJP did not want to indulge in a credit race regarding the Ram Janmabhumi movement. Patil's comments were called an insult to Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray and he later retracted his statement.
