Top court verdict may impact state-specific reservations

The Indra Sawhney judgment set an upper threshold of 50% for reservations, it did so for reservations made under Section 16(4) of the Constitution, which basically allows for reservation for backward classes (including scheduled castes and tribes).

On September 14, 2022, Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government approved a Bill to increase reservation for OBC, SC and STs, taking total reservation in Jharkhand to 77%.(HT_PRINT)

“After 75 years of Independence, there is still a large mass of persons living below poverty line (BPL) who due to economic factors are unable to access facilities. Even if this population of BPL is over 20%, it is a large mass of people,” it said.

The Supreme Court on Monday posted for final disposal the petitions challenging the applicability of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) criteria of ₹8 lakh in NEET-PG 2022-23.

On February 14, the top court had refused to entertain a plea seeking clarification on the applicability of EWS criteria of <span class='webrupee'>₹</span>8 lakh in NEET-PG 2022-23 saying it is seized of the matter and whatever it decides will be applicable.(HT file)

MP considers expanding the base for EWS quota for upper castes

The development is interesting considering the fact that the state ruled by the Congress was slow to implement the 10% reservation for the upper castes poor. It issued the order in the last week of June in 2018, almost six months after the constitutional amendment to the effect by the BJP led Central government.

Chandigarh: St Kabir School fails to get high court’s nod to admit general category students in EWS quota

The Punjab and Haryana high court (HC) has not granted permission to the Sector 26-based St Kabir School to admit general category students against 25% seats reserved for students from economically weaker sections (EWS) in nursery classes. Though a detailed order is awaited, the HC bench of justice Arun Monga, while disposing of the plea, said it would hear the main appeal listed for January 10.
