State seeks to overturn landmark HC judgement on mangrove destruction

The Supreme Court on Monday will hear a special leave petition (SLP), seeking to permit construction within 50 metres of mangroves (buffer zones), filed by the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB). Details about the petition (SLP Diary No.13791 of 2020) were not previously known to the public

Mumbai, India - September 22, 2019 : The construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Railway (MAHSR)project will not only lead to the loss of more than 30,000 mangrove trees, but will destroy an entire ecosystem, according to a report by the Mangrove Society of India (MSI). Eleven types of mangroves trees, 177 species of resident and migratory birds, among other animals, will be affected. Judgement in Jiah Khan suicide case on April 28

Actor Suraj Pancholi will learn his fate on April 28 as the special Central Bureau of Investigation court delivers its verdict on abetment to suicide charges in the Jiah Khan case. Khan was found hanged in 2013 and Pancholi was charged with the crime.

High court stays Haryana govt notification on declaring Mansa Devi Complex ‘holy area’

The Punjab and Haryana high court acted on the plea from Anahita Handa and 11 others, who are operating restaurants and other business establishments in the MDC area. The plea said the notification does not refer to any statutory provision in exercise whereof such a declaration has been issued

MCOCA court rejects Jigna Vora’s plea against bail bond

Former journalist Jigna Vora's plea seeking exemption from bail bond was rejected by the MCOCA court. She was acquitted of all charges in the J Dey murder case in May 2018 but was asked to submit a bail bond in case of appeal. The appeal was rejected by the HC and the six-month period for a further appeal to the Supreme Court lapsed. The court rejected her argument and asked why she did not file the bail bond during the appeal period.
