Cartoon Network is planning to build a large-scale water park on the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand, in the municipality of Bang Saray, located only 15 minutes away from Pattaya, one of the most popular beaches in Thailand and only 90 minutes away from the country's capital Bangkok, it was confirmed last week. Scheduled to open in early 2013, the water park will recreate the Amazon rainforest while including some of the ntework's most popular animated series and cartoon heroes such as Ben 10, The Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo and The Amazing World of Gumball.
The creation of the theme park in Thailand, the first for Cartoon Network, follows a recent trend of entertainment brands reaching out to new markets. Only last month, two entertainment brands announced the creation of theme parks that expand their usual reach. Finnish company Rovio Entertainment, creator of the Angry Birds mobile game, said in a statement that they will be opening parks as well as retail stores all across China. Dubai also announced the opening of a large-scale park with the arrival of the Marvel Adventure attraction centered on action heroes X-Men and Avengers in early 2013.
The creation of the Cartoon Network Amazone Park, first announced earlier this year, will add to the variety of attractions available in a country which is benefitting from rising levels of tourism in Asia. According to the Finance Ministry of Thailand, in 2011 the country welcomed more than 19 million tourists, with a rise in number of visitors from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Cambodia.
The park will include several activities for both adults and children. Thrill-seekers are catered for by the huge vertical drop while younger kids can take in more tranquil attractions such as a giant wave-pool, a winding adventure river, speed-racing slides and raft rides.
Organizers are aiming to attract up to 800,000 local and foreigner visitors a year. A team of designers is working in conjunction with Amazon Falls Co. Ltd, a resort and attractions developer firm in Thailand, on the US$32 million project. Phase one of the project is already underway; the opening of the park is planned for early 2013.
