‘5 classes a week’: Indian mom breaks down why US preschool costs ₹9 lakh a year
An Indian mom’s post about preschool fees for her toddler in America has prompted a range of comments on social media.

Navigating early education abroad can be eye-opening for immigrant families, as highlighted in a viral video about American preschool costs. An Indian mother detailed annual tuition, reaching ₹9 lakh. She explained that small class sizes and inclusive facilities justify the high price.
“Reality of Preschool in America,” Sonal Chaudhary, an Indian and content creator in the US, wrote on Instagram.

She explained, “We recently went to enroll our 2-year-old daughter in preschool, and the annual tuition was approximately $4,000–$9,000, depending on the program.”
The mom continued, “The good part? In most cases, this tuition covers almost everything, with very few additional fees. At first, it felt expensive. But when you look at the teacher-to-student ratio, the facilities, the learning environment, and compare it with average household incomes in the U.S., the cost starts to make more sense.”
She further posted, “Also, it’s important to know that public school (Kindergarten through 12th grade) is free in the United States, so preschool is one of the major early education expenses for many families. Every country has a different education system, this video is simply sharing our experience and how preschool works where we live.”
The video she shared shows her visiting the preschool with her kids. A representative shows her around the establishment, noting that some areas are under renovation.
As they go around, the representative explains that there are only eight students in each class, managed by two teachers. Also, she speaks about the activities available for the toddlers.
Towards the end of the video, Chaudhary explains that there are options involving the days that parents can choose. She adds that while attending five days a week costs ₹9 lakh annually, the fee is lower for two- or three-day options.

What did social media say?
An individual posted, “It's the same in Bengaluru as well for good preschools.” Another commented, “Good explanation…. Though it’s the same in major cities in India. If we compare the purchasing power parity, it’s equally expensive in India. One major advantage in India is that there is more space and activities involved in preschools.”

A third expressed, “Finland is a better choice. All children in pre-school are getting free and high-quality education.” A fourth wrote, “$9000 per year is not bad. Private schools are better than public schools.”
However, some expressed their displeasure with the concept of preschools. An individual shared, “Preschool is a scam. Children don't need it.”
