Why is Joseph Olmo leaving NBC4 Washington? Journalist announces decision on air, hints at future plans
Joseph Olmo did not reveal what he plans to do next, but said people who know him “will not be surprised."

NBC4 Washington reporter and anchor Joseph Olmo is leaving broadcast journalism after nearly a decade. Olmo announced his departure live on air near the end of Sunday’s program.
"Well, before we go tonight, I’ve got just one more story for you,” he told viewers.
He reflected on his career and his time at NBC4, saying that local news has given him the chance to tell stories that matter to the community.
"For the better part of a decade, which includes three thrilling years right here at NBC 4, I have had one remarkable job. You can cover the world, but nothing compares to being a local news reporter. Because think about it. Who else would tell you about all the things happening where we live?"
Why is Joseph Olmo leaving?
Olmo said he has been thinking about having more than one dream in life and decided it was time to pursue another path.
"In life, you are often encouraged to dream big. But what happens when you have several dreams? I firmly believe our time here is way too short to get to the end and wonder – what if I had tried that?”
Olmo said he would return to the streets of the DMV for one final night as a local news reporter after nearly 10 years in broadcasting.
He did not reveal what he plans to do next, but said people who know him “will not be surprised."
He expressed gratitude for the work and the team behind it.
“Whenever you watch us on TV or online, remember one means many. You may see one person on at a time, but there are hundreds of people who get us here,” Olmo added during his last broadcast.
“And to my entire NBC 4 family, I say thank you for letting me be part of this accomplished team. And to everybody who watches us, thank you.”
Who is Joseph Olmo?
Joseph Olmo is a reporter and anchor at NBC4 Washington, where he has covered the D.C. area since 2023.
Raised in Annapolis, Maryland, Olmo has a strong connection to the region and has focused on local stories throughout his career.
Before joining NBC4, Olmo spent about three years at DC News Now, where he focused on transportation coverage. He began his career as a freelance journalist for local and Hispanic news outlets before joining WDVM-TV in Hagerstown in 2020.
While studying media and communication studies at The Catholic University of America, Olmo also balanced his studies with full-time anchoring duties and freelance journalism.
