Sony’s new soap shows woman married to a 10-year-old. Outrageous or publicity stunt?

The promos of the upcoming TV show, Pehredaar Piya Ki starring Tejaswi Prakash and Suyyash Rai, showing a marriage between an adult and a child have raised many eyebrows.

Television never ceases to surprise with its content. Be it naagins or an actor turning into a fly or men having two wives, time and again people have been complaining about TV becoming regressive. But it seems this time one of the upcoming shows, Pehredaar Piya Ki, have taken things too far.

The fiction tells the tale of a usual marriage between an 18-year-old Indian princess and a 10-year-old prince. Yes you read right. Actor Tejaswi Prakash (25) of Swaragini fame plays princess Diya and Afaan Khan essays the character of her husband, prince Ratan Singh. Many are finding this unusual marriage between an adult and a kid cringe-worthy. At least, that’s what the reaction that is being generated around the show after the promos went on air. The show also stars Suyyash Rai.

The one-minute-long video starts with the female protagonist in a palace getting ready. She is shown putting a gun inside her purse and calling out for Ratan Sa and asks if he is ready then they can leave. Soon the 10-year-old walks in decked in black suit looking like a prince. After he is welcomed by the female protagonist with the customary tika, what didn’t go down well was when the child suddenly puts sindoor on her and says that now they are looking ‘perfect’ together.

Here are few reactions:

Well, the video does have the disclaimer that this show does not endorse child marriage but many are finding the promo misleading. While a viewer, Sai Priya, reacted, “What the hell? A boy who should be in primary class is getting married? Can’t accept,” another viewer making fun of the show wrote, Mishi Well28, reacted, “Abe yaar kya hai ye… kya hogya h Sony ko..kaise shows bana rae h.. ye to uska beta ya sabse chotu bhai lag rha h…”. However there are few positive responses too, like “I don’t think this is bad. this is actually going to portray a new take on what relationships are in india. This really happens and I think it would be great to see how it affects people or the whole society for that matter,” commented Rishika Anastasis.

Many are of the opinion this is some kind of publicity stunt on the part of the show makers to promote the show, as they say any publicity is good publicity. After all, the daily goes on air second week of July. However, to clear doubts and find out more about the real concept, when we contacted the makers, they weren’t available for a comment.
