Sanjeeda Sheikh is riding high on the success of her TV show. Straightforward and clear- headed, she doesn’t mince her words. “I am not a diplomatic person,” she says.

The 29-year-old talks about not wanting to do Bollywood films, her bond with Aamir, and her frankness.

Your ongoing show is different from the usual saas-bahu dramas we see on TV. Was it a conscious decision to do the show due to its novel concept?

Unfortunately, on TV, you don’t have a lot of choices when it comes to scripts. I would be lying if I was to say I was waiting for the right script to come to me. When a producer approaches you, you think about the character, and whether you will fit into it. When I was offered this show, I jumped at it since it was different from what we usually see on TV, and it was something that I hadn’t done.

You are a successful TV star, yet films don’t seem to feature on your agenda. Why?

Maybe I am not destined to be part of movies. I feel that one needs to be connected in Bollywood, because, for outsiders, if the first film doesn’t work, no one gives them a second chance. But star kids get multiple chances due to their connections. It’s tough to survive, and I have no patience to struggle so much. It’s better to be a star on TV and do selective work, rather than act in some stupid film.

You are more popular than Aamir. Does that ever affect your relationship?

We’re both chilled out. I am also very comfortable working with him. Unlike other actor couples, we don’t boss each other around about which scenes to do and which ones to not do. He is a secure actor and a non-interfering person. Our fans also talk about us as one entity. Even if I am spotted alone anywhere, they will be heard saying, ‘Aamir-Sanjeeda’.

Who is more possessive?

He’s possessive in a nice and sweet way. I was a very possessive girlfriend, but post marriage, I feel secure. In fact, I wish we get more offers to work together, but perhaps, the makers think that we might be stuck in the make-up room for hours and won’t devote enough time to work. (laughs).

Have you thought about having children yet, or is it too soon?

We think about kids every week. Everyone asks me that; but I feel there’s a right time for everything. Currently, we are doing some wonderful projects. So that phase will come when it has to.
