Karishma Tanna is open to doing daily soaps, wants to a star in a romantic one

Actor Karishma Tanna has had a busy year with Bigg Boss, Love School, Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa on the small screen and now stars in Nagarjuna. She says she is open to doing films if they happen.

Karishma Tanna has had a hectic year. After participating in a reality TV show last year Bigg Boss, she took up judging and mentoring on another reality show with her then-boyfriend, Upen Patel. Currently, she is part of an ongoing dance reality TV show as well as a fantasy fiction series. Thrilled with how her career has progressed, the actor now wishes to star in a “romantic drama”. Excerpts from an interview:

Upma no more? Karishma Tanna, Upen Patel part ways

This year has been a busy one for you.

Yes, but I’m enjoying this phase. I am brushing up on my TV acting skills with this [daily soap]. Shooting for television is quick and one doesn’t have the luxury of [free] time on the sets. TV actors are pros at emoting and delivering their lines in a limited span of time. I am happy to be part of the small screen as I know I can act quickly.

You did varied projects this year. Was it a conscious decision?

I had planned it that way. The reality and the dance TV shows were poles apart, and completely different experiences. While I’ve been busy this year, I want to be busier. I am trying to make the most of this time. I want to feel happy about my work and keep working constantly. As an actor, it gives you a kick to be able to dabble in a variety of things within a year. I am open to doing daily soaps, but I wish I get a romantic drama to star in.

Has your second innings on TV panned out the way you wanted?

As an actor, I want to be happy and satisfied with my work. I am doing TV after four to five years, and I feel the industry gives you work if you work hard at it. I took a backseat from television, as I was trying to get into films. I was told to focus on films specifically. I did reality TV shows, but not daily soaps. I was always offered shows, but I got choosy. I think films have to be in your destiny. If you are destined to do films, you will get cast even if you stay in, say, Lakshadweep Islands.

Playing a snake-woman is the latest trend on television. How do you feel about playing one?

I play the antagonist and enjoy my role to the fullest. Playing a snake-woman is a hot thing and this trend brings in the ratings. As actors, we have to follow the trend and entertain people with the topics that they like. Tomorrow, if action works, we will do that.

What is your take on supernatural themes?

Supernatural themes create worlds which kids, especially in smaller towns, love. They know it is fantasy but it is also entertainment at the end of the day.
